Technical characteristics
Molybdenum's ability to withstand high temperatures without expanding or softening makes it useful at high pressures and high temperatures. Molybdenum wire is sometimes used instead of tungsten wire because of its lower density, about half tungsten, and the weight to strength ratio of molybdenum is even better up to temperatures of 1000 °C. The electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity of molybdenum is about one-third that of copper. Chemically, molybdenum is inert. It is resistant to air and water at normal temperature. At 400-500 ° C, the metal oxidizes, and at temperatures above about 700 ° C, the attack is particularly active. Molybdenum wire is more malleable than tungsten wire. Molybdenum wire is produced in a size range of 0.010 to 0.5 mm (0.00039 to 0.0196 inch).

Electroerosion process
Increasing demands for faster electrophysical cutting speeds have led to the development of new wire materials that can support the high performance power sources available today. The main parameters that determine the durability of electroerosion wire are:
- Tensile strength: this is the bearing capacity of the material based on its ability to resist tensile and fracture;
- The ability to operate at high feed rates;
- Resistance to electroerosion fracture, i.e., the ability of the material to resist the effects of a corrosive spark gap environment;
- Conductivity: this is a measure of a material's ability to carry an electric current. The higher the conductivity, the more power can be delivered to the workpiece. In most cases, this means an increase in cutting speed. Copper provides the highest conductivity, but has limitations because of its relatively low tensile strength.
- Evaporation point. When working EDM with wire erosion, a low melting/evaporation point of the wire will be best for flushing.
Molybdenum is unequivocally better than copper or brass in all these respects. Despite its high tensile strength and high resistance to breakage, molybdenum wire has a very high melting point of 2625 degrees Celsius. Molybdenum's high boiling point of 5,560 degrees Celsius also contributes to improved erosion resistance, as the electrical erosion craters formed on molybdenum wire are quite small. Molybdenum wire is typically used when near-critical internal angular radii are about 100 µm or even less in diameter.
