Production of nickel alloys
General Characteristics
Nickel is the base of a variety of heat-resistant materials that are used in power plant parts, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial chemistry and aerospace. Let's list some of them. Nichrome is a resistance alloy (40% Cr + 60% Ni). Monel (30 - 32% Cu + 65 - 67% Ni + 1% Mn) is very corrosion and heat resistant (operating t° 500 °C). Invar (35% Ni + 65% Fe) - practically does not elongate when heated. Permalloy (17% Fe + 76% Ni + 2% Cr + 5% Cu) has high magnetic susceptibility with minimal significant hysteresis losses. Permalloys are used in the manufacture of electromagnet cores. In addition, nickel alloys include chromium-nickel and nickel steels, as well as nesilver and various resistance alloys such as nickelene, manganine and constantan.
All stainless steels contain nickel, because it not only increases the chemical resistance, but also gives the alloys toughness and strength, which is important, for example, in the production of armor. Nickel alloys (36-38% Ni) with iron, which have a low coefficient of thermal expansion, are used in the manufacture of critical parts for instruments. Coins are minted from nickel alloys. The total number of different nickel alloys that are used in practice today is in the thousands.
Nickel plating
Pure nickel is used to protect non-alloyed steel and iron from corrosion in chemically active environments. Such coatings are applied by two methods: electroplating and cladding. The cladding layer is created by jointly rolling a thick iron sheet and a nickel foil in a hot state. The ratio of coated metal to nickel thickness is approximately 1:10. These sheets are welded together by mutual diffusion, during the rolling process, to produce a two-layer monolayer or sometimes three-layer metal whose surface is protected from corrosion by nickel. This method of creating protective coatings noticeably reduces the cost of products that are made from relatively inexpensive steel or iron. Nickel-plated iron sheets are used in the manufacture of tanks for storage and transportation, for example, caustic alkalis for the needs of the chemical industry.
