Field of application of lead

Electrical Engineering

PbF2 fluoride alone or mixed with copper, bismuth and silver fluoride is used in chemical current sources as a cathode material. PbCl2 chloride is also used in backup current sources to produce cathodes. Lead sulfide, bismuthate, and lead iodide are used for the same purpose in lithium batteries. Lead telluride is widely used in the manufacture of thermoelectric refrigerators and thermoelectric generators, as a thermoelectric material.

MIC

Lead perchlorate serves as a heavy liquid (density 2.6 g/cm³), which is not only used in flotation ore beneficiation, but also serves in composite explosives as an oxidizer. Pb2 NO3 nitrate is in demand in the production of powerful explosive mixtures. Lead azide is widely used as a detonator.

Paints and coatings

Lead white paint, a white dense powder, is produced in air from lead by the action of acetic acid and carbon dioxide. The use of lead white in the form of paint pigment is less common due to low stability and decomposition under the influence of hydrogen sulfide. Such whitewash is mainly used in technology for the production of lead-carbonate paper and cement, as well as in the production of putty. PbO2 dioxide is widely used in batteries and in many backup chemical power sources to produce lead-fluoride or lead-chloride cells. Lead borate, a white insoluble powder, is used to dry lacquers and paintings, and together with various metals to coat porcelain and glass. Lead chromate is known as a chromium yellow dye, which is the most important pigment for dyeing fabrics and porcelain and for making paints. PbSO4 sulfate, a white, water-insoluble powder, is used in printed fabric technology as a pigment in lithography and in batteries. Lead nitrate is a crystalline white substance that is perfectly soluble in water. It is used in matchmaking, textile padding and dyeing, engraving and horn dyeing.

Effects on the living organism

All soluble salts of lead are toxic. Arsenite and arsenate of lead are used to kill insects in the technology of insecticides - pests in agriculture (cotton weevil and gypsy silkworm). PbCl2 chloride, a crystalline white powder, is used for ointments when treating tumors. It is soluble in hot water, in solutions of ammonium chloride and other chlorides. Lead acetate is used in veterinary medicine as an external antiseptic.

Other industries

Lead sulfide, a black, water-insoluble powder, is used in the firing of earthenware. Because of its good γ-radiation absorption, lead is used in nuclear reactors and X-ray facilities for radiation protection. In addition, lead is needed for the construction of nuclear reactors on fast neutrons as a coolant.
