Technical Characteristics
Co is a silvery-white metal, ferromagnetic with a Curie point of 1121 °C, exists in two modifications: The α-modification is stable up to t° 427 °C, and the β- (cubic face-centered lattice) modification is stable at t° 427 °C to 1120 °C.

Usage
- Industrial chemistry (catalysis of chemical reactions);
- permanent magnets: an alloy that contains up to 50% Co with chromium and vanadium is used ;
- Alloying with cobalt can increase the heat resistance of the alloy and improve the mechanical properties of steel, making it tool (drills, cutters, etc.);
- magnetic properties of cobalt alloys allow to use them in equipment for magnetic recording, and in cores of transformers, electric motors;
- CoSi silicide is an excellent thermoelectric material for thermoelectric generators with high efficiency;
- radioactive 60 Co is used in medicine, gamma defectoscopy, and for filling nuclear boilers;
- positive electrode in the manufacture of lithium batteries.
