Erbium is a soft silvery-white rare earth metal of the lanthanoid group. Its atomic weight is 167.26. Extracted from a mineral found near the town of Itterby, after which it was named. Density 9.062 g/cm³, melting point 1529 °C, boiling point = 2510 °C. The valence is positive +3. It has a hexagonal lattice with parameters, a = 0.35 588 and c = 0.55 874 nm. MPC of Erbium is not more than 4mg/m3 in air. It easily reacts with oxygen and halides to form salts. It is industrially produced by electrolysis of ErCl3 melt with chloride salts of potassium, calcium, sodium.
