Technical features

Nitriding is the process of diffusion saturation of the surface layer with nitrogen in hot dissociated ammonia. Such chemical-thermal treatment is applied to parts that are subject to wear at temperatures up to 400°C. Evek GmbH offers to buy a wide range of nitrided structural alloyed steel at an affordable price. We provide product delivery anywhere in the continent. The price is optimal.

Relevance

Nitriding greatly increases the hardness of the surface layer, its wear resistance, endurance limit, corrosion properties in the atmospheric environment, water , etc. The hardness of the nitrided layer is higher than that of the cemented layer and is maintained up to high temperatures (500 ... 550°С), whereas the hardness of the cemented layer, which has a martensitic structure, is maintained only up to 200 ... 225°С. Nitrogen saturation increases the fatigue limit of structural steels due to the formation of residual stresses in the surface layer. The thin layer of ε-phase (0.01-0.03 mm) provides good protection for simple carbon steels with the carbon content of 0.1-1.0% against corrosion in a humid atmosphere and other media.

Heat treatment

Parts are quenched, tempered (tempered) and given a finish, prior to nitriding, as no further heat treatment is necessary after nitriding. As a rule, nitrided parts do not have warping of surfaces. After nitriding the parts are ground or polished, or they are not machined at all. Nitriding of steel products is carried out in the temperature range of 500-620 ° C (depending on the part geometry, process requirements, final product properties , etc.) in hot ammonia, which dissociates, providing the surface of the active atomic nitrogen.

What kind of steel is nitrided?

All types of steel and cast iron can be nitrided, but many nitriding materials have not been used extensively, as, for example, the hardness of nitrided iron is very low, approximately 340 HV. Steels alloyed with aluminum, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium are used for nitriding. Chromium, molybdenum and vanadium increase the solubility of nitrogen in the α-phase and form special nitrides MN and M2 N. The highest values of surface hardness and wear resistance in nitriding are obtained in chromium-molybdenum steels, additionally alloyed with aluminum. A typical representative of these steels is steel 38Cr2MuA. In addition, molybdenum in steel eliminates temper embrittlement, which can occur after slow cooling.

Nitriding of thin-walled items

It is recommended to apply nitriding at temperatures of 500 ... 520 °С and the dwell time of 24 ... 60 hours. Nitriding layer with thickness of 0.3...0.6 mm is formed.

Two-stage nitriding

To accelerate the process, two-stage nitriding is conducted: first at 500-520 °С, and then at 540-560 °С. Despite the rather high temperature, high hardness of the nitrided layer is preserved. A significant reduction of the process, 2-4 times, is achieved by nitriding in a glow discharge.
