Requirements to chemical composition
Properties of tool alloy steels are regulated by
- - for cutting and measuring tools, shallow and deep hardenability (7KhF, KhV4, 9KhS, KhVG, etc.);
- - for cold-deforming dies, including impact tools (X6VF, X12M, 6CV2S, etc.);
- - For hot forming punches, including impact tools (5CrNm, 8Cr3, 4CrMoFS, 7CrV2S, etc.).

GOST 5950-2000
The content of sulfur and phosphorus in the composition should not exceed 0.030% (each element). In alloys produced by electroslag remelting sulfur content should not exceed 0.015%. Residual nickel content in steels of all types, not alloyed with nickel, is allowed up to 0,35%, in steel alloy grade 4X4VMFS - up to 0,60%. Residual copper content in steel shall not exceed 0.30%. It is allowed to make tungsten-containing steels with residual molybdenum up to 0,30% (at tungsten content up to 3,0%) and up to 0,50% (at tungsten content in steel over 3,0%) in compliance with all other requirements of this standard. In steel alloys that are not alloyed with tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum and titanium, allowed the content of tungsten and molybdenum up to 0.20% each (except for steel 5XHNM and 5X2MNF) vanadium - up to 0.15% and titanium up to 0.03%. For steel 5XHNM and 5X2MNF allow partial replacement of molybdenum tungsten from the calculation: one mass fraction of molybdenum is equivalent to two mass fractions of tungsten.

In the marking, the letters mean: P - fast-cutting; the number following the letter - the average mass fraction of tungsten; M - molybdenum, F - vanadium, K - cobalt, A- nitrogen; and digits following the letters mean the mass fraction of molybdenum, vanadium, cobalt, respectively; Sh - electroslag remelting.
Do not indicate
The grades do not indicate the mass fraction:
chromium - at any mass fraction,
Molybdenum - up to 1% inclusive,
Vanadium - in grades Р18, Р6М5, Р9К5, Р6М5К5, Р9М4К8 and Р2АМ9К5,
nitrogen - in alloys of brands 11Р3АМ3Ф2 and Р2АМ9К5.
By customer's request alloys of Р6М5 and Р6М5Ф3 grades can be manufactured with nitrogen alloying (mass fraction of nitrogen from 0,05% to 0,10%). In this case, the designation grades - R6AM5 and R6A5F3.
