New nichrome

characteristic

Nichrome has a successful combination of heat resistance and high electrical resistance. The minimum coefficient of thermal expansion ensures that the wire will not sag at significant temperatures. The surface oxides of chromium and nickel give the alloy excellent corrosion resistance which allows it to be used in aggressive environments. Plasticity allows the finest wire and strip to be rolled in a cold condition. Heat resistance helps nickel alloy fragments withstand mechanical loads without deformation or fracture. Almost the only drawback is that this alloy is quite expensive. To make it cheaper, ferrochromes were developed in which part of the expensive nickel was replaced with iron. At the same time, ferronichromes did not lose their high electrical resistance. Sufficient heat resistance allows their use in the temperature range 1200-1250°C. But with the loss of nickel, ferronichromes also lost their ductility and are more difficult to pull out the fine filaments needed to reliably operate the heating elements. That is why they are often used as the basis for heat-resistant components that are not subjected to severe stress at t° >1000 °C.

use

New chromium-nickel alloys X20H30 and X20H35, compared with the classic X20H80 - more economical and successfully used in modern industry. They are sufficiently resistant to aggressive industrial environments, are used for high-temperature rheostats, resistors, heating elements of industrial flame furnaces. They can be applied by gas-thermal spraying on the heat-resistant parts of turbojet engines.
