Full compliance with modern quality standards. Supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy rare-earth metals, the price - optimal in this segment of rolled metal products.

Technical characteristics

Two types of alloys of the copper-magnesium system are known - CuMg0.2 and CuMg0.5. The addition of 0.1 to 0.7% of magnesium in copper leads to a cold workable solid solution that strengthens the alloy with good electrical conductivity. This is why they are used for the needs of railroads as contact joints. Magnesium wire alloys have been developed since 1992, and in 1995 the high-speed rail line from Hanover to Berlin used 120 mm wire for contact and contact wire. Copper-magnesium automotive cables have been in use since 2010.

Mechanical properties (temperature 20°C)

  • tensile strength, MPa -42...-46;
  • Relative elongation, % -3...-10;
  • yield strength, MPa-37;
  • Thermal conductivity, W/mol - 310.

The strength of copper-magnesium wire can be increased by cold drawing; the highest strength has a wire cross-section of 80 mm2. Copper-magnesium alloy is not quenched. Tensions are relieved by annealing: incomplete at 140 ... 200°C and complete annealing at 400 ... 500°C.

Consumer properties

Alloy CuMg0,5 is stronger than the alloy CuMg0,2 and has a reduced conductivity and thermal conductivity. Both alloys have good deformability, but poor weldability, good resistance to atmospheric and maritime corrosion. Buy copper-magnesium alloys produced according to technical standards EN50149-2001 offers the company Evek GmbH. All products are certified. The supplier guarantees metal delivery to any location specified by the customer.

Designation of alloys

According to EN50149-2001, the alloys in question are designated as CW127C and CW128C, and are available as bars and wires.

  • Europe: CW127C (CuMg0.2), CW128C (CuMg0.5), BS EN 50149: 2012;
  • US: C18661, ASTM B250 (covers the 0.1 to 0.7% magnesium content range).

Applications

The combination of high strength, good conductivity, good solderability, and corrosion resistance provides CuMg0.2 and CuMg0.5 alloys for use in the following industries:

  • Connecting and contact wires for electric rail vehicles;
  • Telecommunication cables;
  • Pin connectors;
  • Automotive switches and contact relays;
  • Automotive harnesses and cables;
  • Contact Wire for High Speed Trains

Electrified railroads operate by supplying electric current from the generating system by means of copper-magnesium cables to wires that run over the y tracks. The current to drive the electric motor in the train is received by a pantograph that is attached to the roof of the train. During movement, a wave is generated along the conductive wire, resulting in alternating stresses that can eventually lead to fatigue failure. To minimize this wave, the conductor is held in tension by weights suspended at each end of its length; hence the need for high-strength wire, of the copper-magnesium alloy system. Conductors made of these alloys have good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and insensitivity to high and low ambient temperatures.
