How tin solder alloys are selected

Tin-based solders join metal parts at temperatures below the melting point of the base materials. The correct alloy is not chosen by tin content alone. Joint design, base metals, service temperature, corrosion environment, heating method, flux system and regulatory requirements all affect the decision. A purchaser should specify the exact alloy or an approved standard rather than request generic “tin solder.”

Common families include tin-lead, tin-copper, tin-silver-copper, tin-antimony and other specialty compositions. Tin-lead solders remain relevant for certain industrial or legacy applications, but lead restrictions may apply to the finished product and market. Lead-free alloys are not automatic drop-in replacements: their melting range, wetting behavior, joint properties and process settings may differ.

ASTM B32 and product forms

ASTM B32 covers solder metal alloys for non-electronic applications and includes product forms such as bar, ingot, powder, ribbon, wire and paste. Electronic solder requirements may be controlled by IPC or a customer specification instead. Always identify the governing standard, revision and alloy designation on the request for quotation.

Melting range and working conditions

An eutectic composition changes from solid to liquid at a single nominal temperature, while a non-eutectic alloy passes through a pasty range between solidus and liquidus. That distinction can affect heating time, joint movement and process control. Published values are typical references only; the material specification and producer certificate govern the supplied lot.
