Magnesium characteristics

Alloys based on Al-Mn and Al-Mg. occupy a leading position among aluminum alloys, unstrengthened in the process of production and subsequent processing. Manganese and magnesium, are characterized by their limited solubility in aluminum, which further decreases with decreasing temperature. However, their hardening effect during heat treatment is small. For manganese, this is explained by the fact that during crystallization of an alloy containing up to 1.9% Mn, intermetallic compounds insoluble in aluminum are formed. As a result, the alloy remains heterogeneous (solid solution and intermetallide particles), which makes quenching and subsequent aging impossible.

Strengthening

For aluminum-magnesium alloys, hardening does not occur because magnesium is completely dissolved in aluminum as early as room temperature, which rules out the formation of any excess phases.
