Technical characteristics

For soldering usually prefer to use copper grades M0 M0b, M1p, M2p, GOST 859-2001. Copper solder must not contain oxygen, and soldering should be carried out in a reducing or protective gas atmosphere or - for cases of special responsibility - in a vacuum. The reasons for these requirements are as follows. In the presence of oxygen, it diffuses into the copper, resulting in the formation of copper oxide Cu2 O. Since the crystal lattice size of the latter compound is significantly larger, intercrystalline cracks occur and the solder seam area itself is intensely saturated with oxygen. The subsequent annealing of the solder joint produces brittle copper hydrides, further reducing durability. In humid air, this contributes to increased porosity of the weld, which is unacceptable for electrical vacuum devices.

Soldering temperature

Copper brazing alloys are high temperature brazing alloys: only above 1100...1120 °C can copper flow around the brazing alloy satisfactorily and fill all gaps (up to 15 mm). The flowability of copper in the process increases with increasing soldering time, which is usually a few minutes.

Advantages of copper solders

Low elasticity of copper vapors which is of particular importance for soldering electrical vacuum products;

Absence of pores in the solder seam, which is explained by the small crystallization interval of copper;

High plasticity of copper solder does not allow solder joint to break at significant difference in thermal expansion coefficients of metals joined by soldering.

Copper solder application

In the process of inseparable connection of small-sized steel parts that do not experience significant operational loads the use of welding is not possible. Soldering with copper solder is a worthy alternative to welding of low and medium carbon steels, normal and alloyed, as well as corrosion-resistant alloys, cast iron, nickel and some other metals. The second area of copper solders - refrigeration, where such alloys are used to connect copper and aluminum pipelines, which operate at low temperatures.
