Hafnium physical and mechanical properties. Applications.
Technical Characteristics
Hafnium (Hf) is a heavy refractory metal with a specific weight of 13.31 g/cm³. Valence +4, +3, +1, boiling point = 4603 °C, t° of melting = 2233 °C. Thermal neutron capture cross-section is about 100 barns, which is 2000 times greater than that of zirconium at 0.2 barns, due to which, zirconium is used in nuclear boilers .

Use
The ability to capture neutrons has led to the use of hafnium in the form of control rods in nuclear reactors. W-Hf-Ta alloy is optimal for feeding fuel in nuclear gas phase engines. Due to its heat resistance and high degree of refraction HfF4 and HfO2 are used in the manufacture of multilayer and astronomical X-ray mirrors, fiber optics, night vision devices. Low yield of electrons makes it possible to produce electron gun cathodes and thermionic efficient electric generators out of hafnium. Manufacture of electrodes intended for welding of low-carbon steel in an argon atmosphere in a CO2 atmosphere, where this type of electrodes proved to be almost four times more resistant than tungsten electrodes.
