Features of manual arc welding of brass billets

The presence of zinc in the composition of this alloy (resulting in lower temperatures in the area of formation of the weld) predetermines the choice of two options for arc welding:

  • Manual welding with the use of a carbon electrode;
  • Semi-automatic welding with a non-consumable electrode.

Both varieties are implemented under a layer of flux (sometimes even with the filing into the welding area of gaseous metabolites through a special hose). The fluxes bind the oxides formed in the weld zone and convert them into slag. At the same time the temperature is lowered and the risk of evaporation of relatively low-melting zinc vapors, which are poisonous to humans, is reduced.

Application

Manual arc welding is used to create strong fixed joints of rolled brass with small (up to 2 ... 3 mm) thickness and welding wire is not used. Powdered flux is used, which covers the processing area and prevents zinc fumes from escaping beyond its boundaries.

The filler wire

To weld thicker workpieces, a filler wire is used, preferably also brass one, which contains silicon as an effective deoxidizer. The supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy brass rolled steel of domestic and foreign production at a reasonable price in a wide assortment. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. The price is optimal.

The technology of mechanized arc welding of brass

Since brass has smaller thermal conductivity than copper, the arc current at welding is decreased by 25...30%. This eliminates overheating of metal in the area of formation of the weld pool, which, in turn, leads to the formation of a coarse-grained structure, with reduced strength and ductility. Arc welding is carried out by "short", not more than 15...20 mm arc, with a voltage not exceeding 20 V. It is desirable to use both fused fluxes (containing high percentage of manganese) and special non-fused, ceramic-based fluxes.

Direct current

Direct current of reverse polarity is used for welding, and the electrodes used are rods with a surface coating, which contains silicon bronze. For butt arc welding, copper electrodes can be used.
