General information

Production of high speed steels by US and North American steel mills is governed by the ASTM A600 standard. This standard specifies seven steel grades containing the necessary percentage of tungsten (grades T1, T2, T4, T5, T6, T8 and T15).19 high speed steel grades containing a higher percentage of molybdenum (grades M1, M2, M3, M4, M6, M7, M10, M30, M33, M34, M36, M41, M42, M43, M44, M46, M47, M48 and M62). The steels are supplied after annealing in bars, sheets, strips, plates and forgings after hot or cold rolling. ASTM A600 provides for the production of two steel grades, M50 and M52, which can also be categorized as high speed steels by the combination of their physical and mechanical properties and chemical composition. Unless otherwise specified, all of the above grades of high-speed steels are produced in electric melting furnaces.

Chemical Composition and Hardness

The chemical analysis of melted steels is done to determine the percentage of elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt. Also regulated are the modes of annealing, hardening, tempering, hardness after heat treatment, macrostructure, porosity, size and nature of inclusions, as well as the degree of decarburization.
