Babbitt reference

B86 - antifriction alloy with low melting point, produced according to GOST 1320-74, Babbitts are used for casting between rubbing parts of moving parts. They are alloyed with antimony, copper, zinc, aluminum and other components. Sliding properties of the alloy are given by a special heterogeneous structure - supporting hard grains are enclosed in a soft tin or lead base. It minimizes friction and wear of the parts in contact with each other and the rotating parts quickly get used to each other.

Contains hard grains in a soft base have the following properties

- minimum hardness HB 13-32,

- Minimum melting point of the base material ≤ 320 °C

- increased ductility ≤100 °C HB 9 - 24.

Disadvantages

Babbitt alloys are not resistant to shock loads and vibration, which often hinders the operation of moving parts. Low strength allows the use of babbitts only in bearings with a strong housing based on steel or non-ferrous alloys.
