Brass alloys containing more than 15% Zn are susceptible to corrosion, which activates the selective removal of zinc, leaving a relatively porous and weak copper layer. As impurities (typically 0.02-0.25%) in alpha brass effectively provide high resistance to decontamination at normal operating temperatures. Increasing the proportion of Sn (up to 1.5%) further increases corrosion resistance and has led to the development of marine brass with good resistance in the marine environment.
