Magnesium is a silvery white, light and malleable metal. Under normal conditions, it is practically unchanged in air - it is protected from oxidation by a thin surface oxide layer. When heated, magnesium is easily flammable, releasing large amounts of light and heat.

Production of

The technical metal is obtained from a molten chloride mixture of Mg, Na and K by electrolysis. It is refined from impurities by electrolytic refining, smelting in vacuum together with special fluxes. Or it is sublimed in a vacuum. The purity of refined magnesium is at least 99.999%. Another, thermal method, is based on the reduction of MgO with coke or silicon at high temperature. Silicon makes it easy to separate pure metal from dolomite.

Advantages

It is very light (specific gravity 1.74 g/cm³), high-tech and cheap material. Mg in bullion costs $3/kg. It is well bent, pressed, rolled, easily drilled and cut. It is stable in mineral oil solutions, gasoline, kerosene, freon. In alloy with other metals it has very high specific strength and corrosion resistance.

Disadvantages

In its pure form, magnesium is quite brittle, easily fusible and fire-hazardous, but these disadvantages can be easily eliminated in an alloy with other metals.

Applications

Magnesium alloy tubes are widely used in the aviation and automotive industries, where it is particularly important to reduce the overall weight of the structure. Lack of interaction with uranium caused the use of magnesium alloys for parts of fuel elements of nuclear boilers.
