Composition and properties

Austenitic weakly magnetic stainless steel AISI 317 LMn differs from the closest analogues by the increased content of manganese, which provides the products made of it with increased mechanical strength. Chemical composition of the steel differs in different countries, as is stated in the table below:

Country Standard Carbon Chrome Nickel Molybdenum
USA AISI 0,03 24...26 22 0,75
Germany DIN 0,02 20 18 5
Japan JIS 0,035 18...20 11...15 2...4

It should be noted that the T.U. production of the exact analogue of the alloy in question is not carried out, and the table provides information that corresponds to the closest in composition and properties to the 03X17H13AM3 alloy. In the USA, alloy 317 LMn is produced according to ASTM/ASME UNS S31726 standards, and in Europe according to DIN standards.

The distinctive performance properties of the steel are:

1.High wear resistance under high temperature corrosion conditions - both in the presence of oxygen and in concentrated acid environments.

2. High resistance to oxidative processes taking place at temperatures up to 850-9000 C and at relative humidity of up to 100%.

3. The stability of geometrical sizes of parts up to temperatures 1150...12000 C.

4.It is not expedient to heat treat the material in order to increase its strength characteristics, because steel cannot be hardened.

Due to the increased manganese content, the hardness of cold-rolled steel is not less than 96NRC, which should be taken into account when machining it.

Fields of use

Alloy AISI 317 LMn (1.4439) is well suited for hot sheet forming, where the optimum heating temperature for the workpieces should not exceed450-5000 C. In such a state when deforming on falling hammers from the given steel it is possible to receive various thin-walled details like bodies of rotation, to carry out spatial bending. Separation operations can also be carried out in the cold state. The steel slightly increases its magnetic properties when welded.

Taking into account high anticorrosive properties, it is recommended to use AISI 317 LMn (1.4439) steel for critical parts of machinery bodies in food, chemical and oil and gas industries, which work under high mechanical loads.
