General Characteristics

Babbitts are antifriction alloys based on lead or tin with low melting point, used for casting between rubbing parts of moving parts. They are alloyed with antimony, copper, zinc, aluminum and other components. Sliding properties of the alloy are given by a special heterogeneous structure - supporting hard grains are enclosed in a soft tin or lead base. This keeps friction and wear on the parts in contact to a minimum, and the rotating parts quickly get used to each other. Lead babbitts brands: B-88, B-83, B-16, BN are supplied in ingots.

Advantages of .

Babbitts are very ductile at normal temperatures. They have extremely small friction coefficient. They reduce wearing of wearing parts and increase equipment efficiency. B16, B83 grades include hard, solid grains in the lead base on which the rotating shaft rests. The light-melting base has t° of melting no higher than 320 °C, it retains sufficient plasticity up to 100 °C. The maximum rotational speed is 60 m/s. Maximum load: static - 150 kgf/cm2, dynamic - 500 kgf/cm2 sec. The maximum operating temperature +110 ° C. The performance of plain bearings determines the thickness of babbitt layer on the steel liner. The optimum pouring thickness is ≥1mm. Babbitts are capable of holding lubricants, while being hard enough to serve as shaft support. Friction coefficient B-16 without grease is 0,25, with grease - 0,006. This reduces the wear of the shaft.

Disadvantages

At room temperature - increased brittleness, the alloy cracks and splinters on impact and vibration.

Production

Production of babbitt alloys in the form of ingots is regulated by GOST 1209-90 B. The composition includes antimony and tin in the amount of 1/6 of the mass of the alloy.

Application

Heat resistance and excellent sliding properties allow the use of lead babbitts under considerable loads in the motor-axle units of rolling stock, steam engines, rolling mills , etc. equipment of heavy machinery. Lead babbitts are relevant for improving the performance of turbine equipment (steam and water turbines), in frame, crosshead, crank bearings of diesel engines, in bearings of crushers, ball and tube mills. It is used for casting of bearing supports, ship and stationary steam engines ≤1200hp, compressors ≤500 hp, lifting devices ≤1800hp, electric motors 270 kW and generators 500 kW.
