Selecting a precision alloy

Precision alloys are specified for controlled physical characteristics such as thermal expansion, electrical resistance, magnetic response or elastic behavior. A generic request for “precision alloy” is insufficient because grades designed for one property can be unsuitable for another. Identify the governing standard, exact designation and the property range required at the service temperature.

Forms, condition and verification

State whether the requirement is for sheet, strip, foil, wire, bar, tube or a cut blank, together with dimensions, tolerances, surface and quantity. Include the heat-treatment or cold-work condition, test temperature, direction of testing and certificate requirements. If an alternative grade is proposed, compare chemistry, processing route and the controlled physical property; buyer approval is required before substitution.

Values published for a precision-alloy family are not lot guarantees. The governing standard, ordered condition and material certificate establish acceptance.

Information needed for a quote
