Alloy ВТ16

Designation

Name The value
Designation GOST Cyrillic ВТ16
Designation GOST Latin BT16
Transliteration VT16
By chemical elements ВTe16

Description

Alloy ВТ16 used: for the manufacture of fasteners (bolts, screws, rivets) and threaded parts, components aircraft designs operating at temperatures up to 350 °C.

Note

Alloy ВТ16 relates to high-strength (a+b)-alloys of the system Ti-Al-Mo-V, and VT14, but differs from the latter by a lower aluminum content and a high content of R-stabilizers. In this regard, the alloy ВТ16 compared to the VT14 alloy contains more R-phase in the annealed condition (10% in VT14, 25−30% in ВТ16). Due to the high content of R-phase alloy ВТ16 has high adaptability. It is well deformed not only hot, but also cold, due not only to (a+b)-structure, but a low content of aluminium. Although alloy ВТ16 can produce almost all kinds of semi-finished products, the bulk products are wires and rods of diameters from 4 to 20 mm, obtained by rolling or drawing. To the structure of rods, designed for production of parts, imposes rather strict requirements: it must be fine-grained and homogeneous. In addition, increased requirements to the geometric dimensions of the rods and the quality of their surface. The composition of the alloy VT 16 also defines good weldability and high ductility of the welded joint immediately after welding.
The use of alloy ВТ16 bespechivaet 1.5 times higher specific endurance limit in comparison with steel 16KHSN.

According to OST 1 90013-81 the total content of other impurities is ≤ 0.30%. A partial replacement of molybdenum by tungsten in an amount not exceeding 0.30% is allowed. The total content of molybdenum and tungsten should not exceed the norms specified in the table for molybdenum. The total content of copper and nickel in an amount not exceeding 0.10% is allowed, including nickel not more than 0.080%. The total content of chromium and manganese in an amount not exceeding 0.15% is allowed. In the semi-finished products of alloy VT16, intended for the manufacture of fasteners (except rivets), the aluminum content should be 2.20-3.80%, and in the other types of semi-finished products 1.80-3.40%. The purpose of the rivet alloy is specified in the order.
According to OST 1 90202-75, the aluminum content should be within the range of 2.20-3.80%, and the hydrogen content ≤ 0.012%.
