General Information on Brass

Brass is an alloy of copper with zinc as the main alloying component. Adding zinc to the usual copper base increases the values of the basic mechanical characteristics of brass: their ultimate tensile strength and yield strength, increasing the relative elongation at tension and the hardness of the alloy. Almost all brass alloys used in production are notable for their manufacturability, they can be easily processed by casting and cutting, forged and stamped both in hot and cold condition.

Classification of Brasses

  1. By pre-delivery condition - foundry or wrought grades;
  2. By hardness: soft, semi-solid and hard;
  3. By degree of pre-strain - riveted (hardened) and non-riveted;
  4. By type of prior heat treatment.

Treatment

Brass alloys containing less than 56.5% Zn and a high percentage of lead are only machined by cutting (some special grades are an exception, where the percentage of copper may be reduced to 54%). Leaded brass is partly replaced by rolled zinc bronzes and by nesilver - an alloy of copper and nickel. Supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy rolled brass of domestic and foreign production at an affordable price in a wide range. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. Brass metallography and its application

The structure of brass alloys determines their ductility and ability to reproduce complex shapes of finished products. For example, α-brass, whose zinc content does not exceed 36% is characterized by good deformability precisely in the cold state, and not in the hot state. Brasses containing from 36 to 45% of zinc belong to β-brasses, and are processed only at elevated temperatures (700...850°C). Γ-brass, which contains more than 48% of zinc, is machined only with metal-cutting machines. Brass alloys of L90 grade and above, in which the copper content exceeds 90%, are included in a special group and are widely used in the manufacture of decorative items and costume jewelry.

Rolled profiles

Deformable brass is used to produce a variety of rolled profiles - bars, wires, strips , etc. They are used to produce items such as bushings, gaskets and plumbing fixtures. Cast brass is used for manufacturing of sliding bearings that operate in conditions of constant friction. Of it are also made pressure screw nuts and the rims of critical worm wheels.
