TL5 titanium circle, rod, sheet

Relevance

Casting titanium alloy TL5 ()Ti-4,25Al-2V). Developed by CRISM "Prometey" for operation in sea conditions. It is distinguished by corrosion resistance in sea water. Modern technologies make it possible to produce the products of any profile from titanium alloys. Cast titanium alloys are irreplaceable in production of fittings for various applications. Cast titanium alloy TH5 is irreplaceable in production of heavy-loaded parts for turbine generators, for propellers and welded structures.

Advantages of titanium alloy TH5

Alloy General characteristics Technological properties Application
TH5 It has greater strength as compared to TL3 but less ductility. It has good casting properties and welds well. Heavily loaded parts of turbine generators, propellers, welded structures.

The low density of titanium makes the weight of structures one and a half times lighter in comparison with steel, which leads to lower load on bearing units in mechanisms. As a consequence, the service life of equipment increases. The resistance of titanium cast alloys to cracking and crevice and intergranular corrosion is valuable. The titanium corrosion rate is less than 0.002 mm/year. Titanium alloys are resistant in fresh and sea water, to atmospheric and soil moisture, they are stable in contact with acids, in environments of oil, oil products and natural gas, in boiling solutions of ammonia and in aggressive industrial atmosphere.

Quality optimization

A number of works proved the possibility to improve mechanical properties of shaped castings by forming biplate structure by heat treatment. It is based on wide α-plates with interlayers of transformed β-phase. Heat treatment yielding a biplate structure includes: 1) annealing at α+β-phase temperatures (at which time the width of the beta layer increases) and 2) subsequent cooling resulting in thin α-plates of different orientations in the β-phase, which effectively inhibits slip transfer through the lamellar structure.

Heat treatment

To form the lamellar structure of parts obtained by precision casting followed by gas-static treatment, they were heated at 1050° (β-region) and cooled at a rate of 1°C/min,. To achieve a biplatelet structure, the samples were heated at 880°C and cooled at rates ranging from 15 to 8000°C/min. As the cooling rate increased, the thickness of the transformed β-layer increased. In the final step, all samples were aged at 500 °C for 24 hours to form fine α-2 phase particles.

Production

The cast titanium alloy TL5 is produced according to OST 5P.9071-88. With the increase of cooling rate of cast titanium alloys the yield strength increases, resistance to low- and high-cycle fatigue increases.

Quality control

To exclude hidden defects, the castings are subjected to hot isostatic pressing, which makes their crystal structure similar to forged metal. All castings undergo a mandatory external inspection, chemical composition analysis, and mechanical properties testing. Such quality control methods as X-ray examination, gamma-ray examination, ultrasonic defectoscopy, luminescent (liquid-penetrant) examination. Castings can also be hydro or pneumatic pressure tested.
