Rolling titanium

Relevance

The industrial development of titanium bar rolling in Russia was started in 1957 at the 250 small-section mill. Initially it had been designed for rolling of aluminum bars. Gradually the basic elements of industrial technology were perfected. Heating methods, rolls calibration, types of butt fittings and deformation modes were rationalized. Studies to assess the quality of semi-finished bars showed the advantages of the method over other methods of deformation. The comparison was made in terms of homogeneity of structure and mechanical properties, as well as in terms of accuracy of geometrical parameters and surface quality.

At present the method of bar rolling is used for production of round bars with diameter of 10-150 mm; production of bars with mechanically processed surface with diameter of 6-120 mm; production of wire with diameter of 1.0 - 7 mm, as well as sections of hexahedral, square and other sections.

Peculiarities of titanium section rolling

Technologically, titanium is very different from other metals. Firstly, it has a low thermal conductivity, so there is cooling of the peripheral layers of the metal with a loss of plasticity, which creates a significant unevenness of deformation over the section of the rolled material. Secondly, the low density impairs the capture of titanium by the rolls.

Cross helical rolling

For the last two decades the helical cross-rolling method (HCR) has been employed in the production of titanium alloy wire. This method, in combination with closed-die forging and bar rolling, considerably enlarges the range of production means and fits harmoniously into the general technological scheme of things. PVP has a number of features. First, work rolls (technological tool) are universal, their calibration does not depend on technological properties of used titanium alloys. This considerably reduces the tooling costs. Secondly, in order to reset the equipment to a different workpiece size, the work rolls just need to be brought together or apart in the stand. This allows a smooth change in the diameter of the rolled product and ensures high production accuracy. Thirdly, by means of infinitely variable adjustment of the rolling diameter, changing the feed angle and roller speed, the deformation-speed mode of production can be easily selected in a very wide range. Even at low rolling speeds, productivity is quite high. This is explained by the fact that, depending on the type of work rolls and calibrations, during a single pass in the stand of PVP deformation can be 20 - 90%.
