Lead processing

Treatment with sodium salts

The Garris method is based on the fact that arsenic, antimony and tin have a higher affinity for oxygen than lead. The essence of this method is to expose the molten lead to nitrate at a temperature of 400 to 420 ° C. This oxidizes tin, antimony and arsenic. These oxides dissolve when NaOH is added to the melt to form an alkaline melt. Sodium chloride is added in order to lower the melting point and facilitate further metal extraction. After the extraction of arsenic, tin and antimony from the mixture is completed, NaCl and NaOH are recovered and returned to the process to process the next portions of lead. This method produces a purer metal - lead and noble metals - with less loss,

Desulfurization

This method is very widely practiced. It consists in treating lead with zinc, which is soluble in lead and does not interact with it. By contrast, silver and gold, which are up to 3 g/kg in lead, interact with zinc, forming refractory intermetallic compounds AgZn3 and AuZn3, which are virtually insoluble in lead. These compounds, as the lightest, float to the surface as a silvery zinc foam.

Removal of bismuth from lead

Lead is treated in a liquid bath with a suitable disulfurizing agent - an alkali or alkaline earth metal. As a result, a slag is formed on the surface of the bath, which consists of bismuthides of alkali metals, commonly referred to as bismuthizing slag. In addition, it also contains a significant amount of lead.
